NOTE: If you let it go the full 24 hours, it will be much stronger, which is what I prefer. If you find your coffee is too strong, you can always cut it with some water, which can make it last even longer! Also, I recommend leaving the grinds out to steep at room temperature, not in the fridge. I can't really explain why, but having tried both, it seems to taste better if it steeped at room temp. After it's done steeping and you've filtered out the grinds, you're fine to place it in the fridge.
