Did you ever feast on Lofthouse cookies in elementary school? These were a huge hit for birthday and pizza parties as a kid and I’ll never get tired of their distinctive pillowy texture and sugary frosting! To celebrate National Sprinkle Day, I decided to try recreating these beloved cookies at home – homemade frosting and all. They were surprisingly easy to bake, and are probably slightly healthier for you than the store-bought ones (if you can consider cookies healthy, lol). The best part is that you can mix and match colors for the frosting and sprinkles! Well, the best part besides eating them 😉
Frosted Lofthouse Cookies

- stand mixer
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unstalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 1/3 cup sour cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/8 tsp almond extract, optional but gives that OG flavor
- 1 3/4 cups flour
- 1 1/2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
- 1/8 tsp salt
Buttercream Frosting
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2-3 tbsp heavy cream
- food coloring, optional
- sprinkles, optional
Instructions
- Cream butter and sugar on med-high until fluffy. Add egg and beat until mixed, then reduce speed to low and add the sour cream, vanilla, and almond extract. Make sure to scrape down the sides if necessary.
- In another bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt. slowly add dry ingredients to wet ingredients until fully combined. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 375°F, and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Roll tbsp-sized scoops of dough into a ball, and then place on the baking sheet, spaced out. Use the bottom of a glass to flatten the dough into a disk (the dough is sticky, use parchment between the dough and the glass).
- Bake for 9-13 min until just starting to turn golden. Allow to cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.
Buttercream Frosting:
- Cream butter oh med-high until fluffy. Add salt, vanilla, and 2 cups of sugar, and beat until smooth. Add heavy cream 1 tbsp at a time, followed by the remaining powdered sugar until desired thickness is reached. Add food coloring if desired and mix until thoroughly combined.
- Frost cookies and enjoy!
