Peanut butter is one of my guilty pleasures – I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve had a good number of PB&J sandwiches even as an adult (seriously… such a good midnight snack). Sometimes the pre-packaged stuff can be full of added sugars and preservatives though, and making your own homemade peanut butter is an awesome way to keep the nutrition high and calories down! Natural peanut butter is typically less creamy than the store-bought kind, but with a good blender you can really make it as crunchy or creamy as you like. Add onto some toast or apple slices and you’ve got a delicious homemade snack! What kind of peanut butter is your favorite?
Peanut Butter
Equipment
- blender
Ingredients
- 4 cups raw, unshelled peanuts
- 1 tsp salt
- 2-4 tbsp peanut oil, or some other neutral oil (optional)
- 2-3 tbsp honey or other sweetener (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. spread the peanuts out on a baking sheet in one layer (you will need multiple baking sheets). Roast the peanuts for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown and fragrant. This step helps the peanuts release their oils and adds a richer flavor, but if you prefer raw peanut butter skip the roasting, either way is fine!
- Add the peanuts to the blender and pulse until they're ground up. If you want chunky peanut butter, save 1/2 cup of the chunks now to be added back later. Blend the rest on high until as smooth as desired. Pause every 30-45 seconds to scrape down the sides of the blender with a spatula as necessary. Once the desired consistency is reached, add the salt and other optional add-ins and blend for an additional minute. (If you want nothing but raw peanut butter, no salt is required).
- Enjoy!
